Jason Williams was born on November 18, 1975, in Belle, West Virginia. After playing high school basketball with NFL star Randy Moss at Dupont High School, Williams decided to attend Marshall University. Williams was redshirted his first year at Marshall and posted solid numbers the following season: 13.4 points per game and 6.4 assists per game. This turned out to be the only season that Williams would spend at Marshall because he followed his head coach Billy Donovan to the University of Florida. After averaging 17.1 points per game and 6.7 assists per game during his first season at Florida, Williams was permanently suspended from the school due to continued drug use. Therefore, Williams decided to entire the 1998 NBA Draft and was picked seventh overall by the Sacramento Kings.
Williams was a nearly instantaneous hit in the NBA with his flashy style of play. Known for his breathtaking cross-over dribbling and seemingly impossible passes, Williams was a virtual lock for nightly TV highlight shows. However, even though he could dazzle an audience with his behind-the-back passes, Williams was criticized for his penchant of turning the ball over. Williams has responded to the criticism by drastically reducing his turnovers over the last four seasons of his career. He has spent nine with the Kings, the Memphis Grizzlies, and the Miami Heat. Through the 2006-07 season Williams has won one NBA title with the Heat and has averaged 11.7 points per game and 6.5 assists per game.
